Partially printed manuscript document signed by Bowdoin as Governour of Massachusetts and Avery as Secretary of the Commonwealth, comprising a commission appointing Frederick Frye  “Lieutenant in the troops to be raised by this Commonwealth.”  9-11/16 x 15 inches, on paper, with state seal attached; minor soiling and foxing, etc., creased at 3 vertical and 1 horizontal fold, split at right fold, old archival  ape repair verso of left fold.

Interesting document pertaining to Bowdoin’s conscription of a private militia to

suppress the rebellion by Daniel Shays and his followers in western Massachusetts.
